Shopify, the leading e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems introduced Sidekick. It's an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant that can answer merchant queries, provide sales insights, and update store settings with natural language commands.

About Sidekick

Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke published a Twitter post yesterday in which he showed what Sidekick will be and explained what was the motivation and premise for creating the tool. He also listed some of Sidekick’s features, which include storefront design, developer documentation, and analyzing economic trends.

Implications for developers

I published a post not too long ago titled Front-end last and the "3 before 1" rule, in which I mentioned what we saw in the video from Lutke. There will be more and more integration of artificial intelligence into software development. This will change the business approach to software development and cause a radical shift in who we will need for teams and how much the role of developers may change.
